2006 / 2007 Cruising log

Miami to Texas

We departed Bayside and headed to Key West only to discover there are no decent places to stop between Biscayne Bay and Marathon.  We bypassed the anchorage crowded with derelict boats at Marathon and spent a couple of days at Bahia Honda before heading on to Key West.

Key West was as much fun as ever, dog friendly with great shopping and restaurants.  After a couple of days we had a great weather window to cross the Gulf with strong NE winds and no cold fronts predicted for a week.  It was time to go.

3/26/08 - 4/3/08

We had an awesome downwind crossing with good weather and strong winds until the night of 3/31 when a cold front finally got us.  We had an hour of winds to 50 knots and large breaking waves with oilrigs all around and rain.  When the wind dropped back to 30 knots it seemed absolutely pleasant.  We're glad it was a short lived storm.

We motored in the Galveston Jetties before dawn on 4/2 and were shocked by the disgusting water color when the sun came up.  I guess we were spoiled now.

On 4/3 I spoke to my boss about coming back to work.  He asked me to hurry back to take a drug test that day so I could start on the weekend.  Felt strange to be in a hurry... Time to start planning the next trip.
